2025 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

Today, May 29, the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities joins the global community in observing the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. This year marks the 77th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping, commemorated under the theme: “The Future of Peacekeeping.” United Nations Peacekeeping

Since 1948, more than two million peacekeepers have served in over 70 UN peace operations, assisting countries in transitioning from conflict to peace in some of the world's most challenging environments. Currently, over 100,000 military, police, and civilian personnel from 125 countries are deployed in 11 peacekeeping missions, working to protect civilians and support peace efforts.

Established by the UN General Assembly in 2002, this observance honors the dedication and sacrifice of those who have served as UN Peacekeepers and commemorates those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of peace. To date, more than 4,400 peacekeepers have died while serving under the UN flag.

To mark this day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres laid a wreath at UN Headquarters, paying tribute to the peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. In his message for 2025, Guterres emphasized the critical role peacekeepers continue to play:

“Peacekeepers embody the highest ideals of the United Nations. Their commitment and courage help save lives, stabilize communities, and uphold the values of peace and dignity. As the world faces new and complex challenges, we must ensure peacekeeping remains agile, inclusive, and equipped to respond to the needs of the future.”

The Auschwitz Institute honors the extraordinary service of all peacekeepers—past and present—and reaffirms its support for multilateral cooperation to prevent conflict and protect civilians. As global peace and security face mounting challenges, the mission of UN Peacekeeping remains a vital pillar of international solidarity and hope.
